As the summer sun blazes overhead and the days grow longer, our bodies—and especially our skin—can start to feel the effects of the heat. Whether you’re gardening under a hot sky, chasing kids through sprinklers, or simply enjoying that golden summer glow, keeping cool becomes a priority—not just for comfort, but for health.
Thankfully, nature offers us a beautiful remedy: cooling herbs.
These gentle plant allies help calm inflammation, ease heat-related irritation, and nourish your skin from the inside out and the outside in. As an herbalist and homesteader who works with the rhythms of the seasons, I love bringing cooling herbs into my daily routine—and into my apothecary creations.
During the warmer months, we’re more prone to:
Heat rashes and sunburns
Dehydrated or inflamed skin
Puffiness and redness
Hormonal shifts due to stress and overheating
Cooling herbs are energetically “yin” in nature—they calm, hydrate, and reduce inflammation. Some favorites include lavender, rose, peppermint, chamomile, and cucumber. These herbs are rich in skin-loving properties and offer aromatic comfort too.
I’ve crafted two soothing facial mists that are staples in my summer skincare ritual:
Lavender Facial Mist – Calming and clarifying, lavender cools overheated skin, reduces inflammation, and brings emotional balance on hot, frazzled days. It’s a gentle toner and great for after-sun care.
Rose Facial Mist – Rose is the queen of cooling. It deeply hydrates, calms redness, and tones the skin with a luxurious, uplifting scent. It’s ideal for sensitive skin or anytime you need to feel refreshed and grounded.
Just a few spritzes throughout the day offer an instant refresh. I keep mine in the fridge for an extra chill!
Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate cooling herbs into your summer skin care:
Soak a cloth in an infusion of rose petals, chamomile, or calendula and apply to the face or sun-kissed areas. It helps reduce heat and soothe inflammation naturally.
Brew a strong tea of mint, lavender, or cucumber and freeze in an ice cube tray. Rub gently over the skin after being in the sun—it reduces puffiness and leaves you glowing.
Use cooling herbs like peppermint and lemon balm for a short steam—just 1–2 minutes—to open pores and allow sweat and heat to release. Follow with a splash of cold water or a spritz of lavender mist.
Sip on herbal infusions made with hibiscus, rose, or cucumber throughout the day. These not only hydrate you from within but support your skin in detoxifying and cooling.
Whether you’re a sun lover or more of a shade seeker, embracing the power of cooling herbs helps your skin (and spirit) stay balanced and beautiful all summer long.
